Feel the history of Tettnang

Tettnang lies high above the Schussental Valley, 466 metres above sea level, on a hill that is located approximately eight kilometres distance from the banks of Lake Constance. Tettnang is fittingly characterised as the small residence, which is just as much in accordance with today’s appearance with the three local castles as it is with the historical significance of the town, of which the residence character has defined its history over a number of centuries.

In the year 882, “Tetinanc” was officially recorded in documents for the first time. The name of the town is composed of the name of its founder Tetto and the word “wang”, which is a term that was used for a field or plot of land. In the first half of the 12th century, the Counts of Bregenz built a castle at the same location upon which today’s New Palace stands.

During the course of the second division of the Montfort dynasty in 1268, Tettnang was allocated to Count Hugo III. In contrast to his brothers, who were given the sizeable towns of Bregenz and Feldkirch, Count Hugo III received only a relatively small village. He dedicated himself to establishing and expanding the town. On the 1 of December, 1297, Count Hugo III put municipal law into effect.

Up until the Second World War, the community of Tettnang still had a rural nature. Even today, hop cultivation, which began in 1844, and fruit-growing are still of great economic importance. Additionally, regional handicrafts and trade, which had been practiced for centuries, were expanded. The industrial location of the first electronic company in 1956 and the foundation of the technical college for electronics in 1964 created further impetus toward expansion. Providing over 2000 jobs in a number of medium-sized companies, the electronic industry in Tettnang is now counted among the most important economic factors of the town.
